On Wednesday, Cine and TV Artists Association (CINTAA) said that it will be setting up committees to tackle sexual harassment in the industry. The committee will include actors Raveena Tandon, Swara Bhaskar and Renuka Shahane.
In the wake of the #MeToo movement, 11 women filmmakers, including Zoya Akhtar, Alankrita Shrivastava, Meghna Gulzar, Gauri Shinde, Kiran Rao, Konkona Sen Sharma, Nandita Das, Nitya Mehra, Reema Kagti, Ruchi Narain and Shonali Bose have pledged not to work with ‘proven sexual offenders’.
The #MeToo movement currently happening in India shows the progress the country has made with the women finally speaking up against their abusers but at the same time the movement also shows the ugly side of the country. Actor Renuka Shahane has become the latest person to disclose her personal story of having faced sexual misconduct, as India’s MeToo movement gains pace. Following accusations made by Vinta Nanda and actors Sandhya Mridul and Deepika Amin, Renuka admitted that she was aware about sexual allegations against Alok Nath.
Yet another veteran Bollywood actor has been accused of sexual assault. Actor-Poet-Writer, Piyush Mishra has been accused of Sexual Harassment by a woman on facebook. A woman named Ketki Joshi, took to facebook to discuss her ordeal that dates back to 2014.
The current #MeToo moment that is finally happening in Bollywood has been garnering support from every quarter. Not just netizens but also celebrities such as Sonam Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut, Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma, Farhan Akhtar, Imran Khan etc have voiced their support for the moment.
Bollywood actor Imran Khan has said that he knew about disgraced film director Vikas Bahl’s alleged sexual misconduct against female actors and feels guilty about not speaking up about it sooner. In an interview to The Indian Express, Imran detailed how Vikas’ misdeedswere discussed in Bollywood circles but brushed under the carpet.
