It seems the Shree Rajput Karni Sena, the group vehemently opposing the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s new film Padmaavat, has mellowed down. According to the latest reports, the group is ready to watch the film before its release on January 25.

The Karni Sena said today that it was ready to watch the Bollywood period drama as offered by Bhansali productions to end the deadlock on the issue.

“We are ready to watch the film. We never said that we will not watch the film. The filmmaker had assured us one year ago that he will go for a special screening and now he has written for the screening and we are ready for that,” Sena leader Lokendra Singh Kalvi, who was in Uttar Pradesh, told PTI over the phone.

Bhansali production had on January 20 written a letter to Shree Rajput Karni Sena and Rajput Sabha, Jaipur, inviting them to watch the film and assured that the film showcased the honour and valour of the Rajput community.

‘Padmaavat’ has been a bone of contention between Rajput groups and the makers. The movie has been a part of volatile protests since its inception. The movie has been facing violent protests by the fringe group, Shri Rajput Karni Sena who blame the director and lead actors of insulting their community and tarnishing important historical figures. The movie makers have said that the screenplay is based on Mohammad Jayasi’s poem Padmavat and it’s a true adaptation.

Originally titled Padmavati, the film's name was changed to Padmaavat as suggested by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The CBFC recently cleared the film for release with U/A certificate and a set of five modifications.

‘Padmavat’ stars Deepika Padukone in the titular role of Rani Padmini. Shahid Kapoor will play Rana Rawal Ratan Singh, the 42nd ruler of Mewar and husband of Padmini. Ranveer Singh will essay the role of Alauddin Khilji. And Aditi Rao Hydari will play the wife of Alauddin Khilji.

The film tells the story of Rani Padmavati, the legendary Mewar queen known as much for her beauty and intelligence as she was for her courage; her husband Maharawal Ratan Singh, a glorious Rajput ruler and a warrior king who fought until his dying breath to defend his kingdom and his wife’s honour; and Sultan Alauddin Khilji, an ambitious and obsessive invader, who left no stone unturned in his pursuit of Padmavati.

Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the movie is produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Sanjay Leela Bhansali production.

The movie will release on January 25th.
