The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, refused the pleas of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh governments to ban Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmaavat’. The SC refused to modify its earlier order on Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus 'Padmaavat'.

Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh governments had filed pleas seeking modification in the apex court's order, which had paved the way for the release of the controversial film.

The top court last week set aside the notification passed by the states of Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat to ban the release of 'Padmaavat'.

‘Padmaavat’ has been a bone of contention between Rajput groups and the makers. The movie has been a part of volatile protests since its inception. The movie has been facing violent protests by the fringe group, Shri Rajput Karni Sena who blame the director and lead actors of insulting their community and tarnishing important historical figures. The movie makers have said that the screenplay is based on Mohammad Jayasi’s poem Padmavat and it’s a true adaptation.

Originally titled Padmavati, the film's name was changed to Padmaavat as suggested by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The CBFC recently cleared the film for release with U/A certificate and a set of five modifications.

‘Padmavat’ stars Deepika Padukone in the titular role of Rani Padmini. Shahid Kapoor will play Rana Rawal Ratan Singh, the 42nd ruler of Mewar and husband of Padmini. Ranveer Singh will essay the role of Alauddin Khilji. And Aditi Rao Hydari will play the wife of Alauddin Khilji.

The film tells the story of Rani Padmavati, the legendary Mewar queen known as much for her beauty and intelligence as she was for her courage; her husband Maharawal Ratan Singh, a glorious Rajput ruler and a warrior king who fought until his dying breath to defend his kingdom and his wife’s honour; and Sultan Alauddin Khilji, an ambitious and obsessive invader, who left no stone unturned in his pursuit of Padmavati.

Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the movie is produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Sanjay Leela Bhansali production.

The movie will release on January 25th.
