The teaser of ‘Kalank’ movie released yesterday to tremendous response. The ambitious period drama set in the 40’s boasts an incredible cast of Madhuri Dixit Nene, Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha and Aditya Roy Kapur.

Though Madhuri Dixit looks perfect for the role of Begum Bahaar, she wasn’t the first choice. When the movie was first announced by filmmaker Karan Johar, Sridevi was all set to play the role of Begum Bahaar. But the untimely death of the superstar left the producer with no choice but to replace the actress.

During the teaser launch event of ‘Kalank’, Madhuri Dixit was asked about stepping into the shoes of Sridevi, she said, "It was tragic news and I had a heavy heart when I was approached for the movie. She was a brilliant actress. To step into her role, as an actress, you do your role, but yes she was always remembered on the sets as she was supposed to do the film. But, then if you start working on the project, you have to see beyond that and you have to do with conviction and that's what I did. We definitely will miss her".

Post Sridevi’s demise, it was Sridevi’s daughter, Janhvi Kapoor, who announced that Madhuri will be seen in ‘Kalank’. She shared a photo of the veteran actors and wrote, "Abhishek Varman’s next film was very close to mom’s heart ...Dad, Khushi and I are thankful to Madhuriji for now being a part of this beautiful film..."

Directed by Abhishek Verman, ‘Kalank’ is presented by Fox Star Studios and produced by Dharma Productions and Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment.

The movie was conceived by Karan’s father Yash Johar 15 years ago and was the last project he worked on. Post the release of 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' (2003), Karan wanted to direct it himself. Unfortunately, the film, which was in pre-production then, went on the back burner, but the script always remained close to his heart.

'Kalank' will release on April 17.
