Actress Alia Bhatt has started prepping for her role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next movie ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, in which she plays the titular character.
The actress may be a Gujarati and even had her paternal grandfather hailing from Kathiawad but she has started training for the Kathiawad Gujarati dialect.
A Mid Day report has claimed that has approached Marathi actors Manoj Joshi and Supriya Pathak to help her.
The tabloid quoted a source as saying, “Interestingly, Alia’s paternal grandfather Nanabhai Bhatt was a Gujarati Brahmin who hailed from Kathiawad. But Alia is not familiar with the dialect as it is rarely used outside of the pocket in Gujarat. Since the filmmaker is meticulous in his prep, he wants a tutor who is fluent in the dialect. Bhansali has reached out to some of Mumbai’s famous Gujarati theatre personalities, including actors Manoj Joshi and Supriya Pathak, to help him in his search. The film will be shot simultaneously as she undertakes the month-long diction class. The dialect has a strong Sindh influence as the region was inhabited by the Kathis and Rajputs from present-day Rajasthan and Sindh.”
The movie is based on a book written by journalist S Hussain Zaidi, titled ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’. Gangubai Kathewali was the matriarch of Kamathipura in Mumbai. She was a young woman pushed into prostitution but turns into one of its biggest supporters. She makes money off the trade but carries a soft spot for young women forced into it.
Earlier, Alia Bhatt and Sanjay Leela Bhansali were all set to work together in ‘Inshallah’, which also starred Salman Khan. However, the film was shelved last month following creative differences between the director and Salman.
“I was very excited to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Salman as well, I believe sometimes certain things happen which are not in your control. They say if you want to make God laugh, tell them your plans. Plans never really go ‘as per plan’ but I can give it to you in writing that I am going to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali very soon,” Alia had said upon scrapping of Inshallah, before Gangubai was announced.
Alia Bhatt has an interesting 2020 lines up. The actress has projects such as ‘Brahmastra’ with Ranbir Kapoor, Mahesh Bhatt's directorial comeback ‘Sadak 2’, and Karan Johar's multi-starrer ‘Takht’. Bhatt will also make her Telugu language debut in SS Rajamouli's ‘RRR’. Starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR, ‘RRR’ will narrate the stories of well-known revolutionaries — Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem.
