One of the names to come out during the #MeToo movement is singer Anu Malik’s. It all started with singer Sona Mohapatra and Shweta Pandit accusing Anu Malik of sexual harassment. On October 17, Shweta took to her social media and narrated the alleged incident that took place in 2001. She wrote, “This is my #MeToo and have to warn young girls about #AnuMalik & let you know your #TimesUp. Thank you @sonamohapatra for speaking up about him & supporting this.”
On Wednesday, Cine and TV Artists Association (CINTAA) said that it will be setting up committees to tackle sexual harassment in the industry. The committee will include actors Raveena Tandon, Swara Bhaskar and Renuka Shahane.
In the wake of the #MeToo movement, 11 women filmmakers, including Zoya Akhtar, Alankrita Shrivastava, Meghna Gulzar, Gauri Shinde, Kiran Rao, Konkona Sen Sharma, Nandita Das, Nitya Mehra, Reema Kagti, Ruchi Narain and Shonali Bose have pledged not to work with ‘proven sexual offenders’.
The #MeToo movement currently happening in India shows the progress the country has made with the women finally speaking up against their abusers but at the same time the movement also shows the ugly side of the country. The number of #MeToo stories coming out every day show the amount of abuse women have been subjected to throughout the years in a country that claims to respect their women.
